Everyone's Uncle
Comic Reviewed: My Uncle Jeff
Reviewed by: Eric Davis Date: December 31, 1969
This was only the second small press book I had read after Jason Lutes' incredible on-going Berlin. I can't believe more comics aren't like these two. Everyone should read this book!
The main story surrounds Hurd's family coming together to decide what to do about caring for his ailing grandfather, but evolves into an unbelievably poignant and tender memoir of Hurd's Uncle Jeff - a guy that makes his mark in the world by never making his mark in the world.
The book reminded me of my own "Uncle Jeff"; so much so that I immediately hunted down two more copies for relatives. Uncle Jeff is a wise investment in time and money. The book is handsomely illustrated by Pedro Camello (without any purported direction from Hurd). This is a book you should own.

HIGHLIGHT
Beowulf At last, Gareth Hinds 3 issue miniseries retelling the classic epic Beowulf is collected into a single book. Retelling the saga of Beowulf in 3 chapters, split between his battles with Grendel, Grendel's mother, and his death as an old man against a dragon, Hinds' art evolves as well, climaxing in the amazing lush color of the second chapter (the art was painted on sheets of wood that lets the grain of the wood show through, adding an amazing texture!) before drawing down to the faded colors of Beowulf's last days. Very cool.
Only 14.35!
